Internships
Most employers consider "real world experience" a deciding factor in hiring. Students at The University of Alabama are encouraged to become better informed and more qualified through internships, cooperative education positions and/or volunteer opportunities in their fields.
What is an Internship?
An internship is an opportunity to enhance classroom learning through practical experience. Internships may be paid or unpaid and may be full-time or part-time. Most positions are for one semester, though some are designed for longer periods. Internships can be found in corporate and private businesses, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. All internships should have the common goal of providing students supervision and a chance to learn while contributing.
Why should I pursue an Internship?
- Interning is one of the best ways to explore occupations and work environments.
- You have a chance to "test drive" a career and identify your likes and dislikes in the field.
- Related experience increases your marketability.
- Interns can network with professionals in the field and learn about future jobs possibilities.
- Many employers convert interns to full-time employees.
When should I do an Internship?
It's never too early to begin researching opportunities! Some employers specify juniors and seniors while others hire freshmen and sophomores. Check with your academic department regarding any requirements you may have and be sure to note deadlines for internships. If you get started early, you may be able to do more than one during your college career.
